One Big Heap of the Same Weird Stuff
A creative prompt for blurring the divide between you and everything else
Welcome to Roam, a new monthly column where we wander, wonder, play! I’ll send a creative-contemplative prompt—a nudge out of the ordinary—that we can all use to get hands-on and experimental with life.
Last week, we leaned into noticing what connects us rather than what divides us.
This week’s prompt is a perceptual experiment, inspired by the Vajrayana practice of “Pure Vision”, that helps us see the wild, vibrant interconnectivity of all things.
Journal with it, meditate on it, pen a weird little poem… Or just let it sit in your subconscious, heavy, like an undigested burrito.
Roam Exploration:
Go to a place where the world moves around you—a street, a park, a café, the mall. Somewhere alive. Be still and look around.
Now imagine that everything—every person, every object, every sound—is made of the same stuff. The bus, the trees, the neon sign flickering above a laundromat, the man arguing on his phone, the woman buying cigarettes — Everything humming with the same pulse, made from the same cosmic raw material.
Include yourself in this roiling heap. Bring it to life!
Questions to ask in this space:
What catches my attention that I was missing before?
What is out of place? What is exactly where it belongs?
What does it mean to be an independent person in this?
How do emotions move in this space?
What new stories and narratives are coming to life?
Stay here for a while, soaking in this equal hum—not as a concept, but as something viscerally experienced.
Try it. Write through it, draw about it, meditate on it. Have an argument with your cat. Then let me know in the comments what came loose for you:
And if you want to take this deeper, join me for next week’s Tonglen meditation—same theme, more space to explore.
See you there.
